Engineered Forced Induction & Exhaust Upgrades for BMW X5 E70 (M57, N57, N55)
The second-generation BMW X5 (E70) manufactured between 2006 to 2013 remains one of Munich’s most capable full-size performance platforms. Renowned for its double-wishbone front suspension and robust xDrive all-wheel-drive system, the E70 serves as a premier base for high-torque diesel performance and turbo petrol tuning. Whether you are extracting 400+ bhp and 800+ Nm from the cast-iron M57 3.0sd / 35d twin-turbo, modernising an N57 40d or M50d tri-turbo, or pushing an N55 35i to hold boost across the rev band, the mechanical ceiling of this chassis is immense.
However, accelerating or towing over two tonnes of vehicle under sustained boost generates extreme thermal and backpressure choke points. Restrictive close-coupled primary catalytic converters, dense factory Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF), complex US-spec SCR/DEF emission mixer canisters, and undersized tube-and-fin charge-air coolers create extreme heat soak. Under high load, elevated Exhaust Gas Temperatures (EGTs) and rising Intake Air Temperatures (IATs) trigger the Bosch DME/DDE to pull ignition timing, derate fuel injection quantity, and dump boost pressure.
Our E70 performance parts eliminate these mechanical bottlenecks directly:
-
Billet Hybrid Turbochargers (M57, N57, N55): Factory turbochargers suffer from compressor surge, high shaft speeds, and sharp top-end boost taper under aggressive remapping. Engineered with 5-to-7-axis CNC-machined lightweight extended-tip billet compressor wheels, oversized exhaust turbines, and heavy-duty 360-degree motorsport thrust bearings. Whether upgrading the sequential multi-turbo assemblies on an M57 35d or N57 40d to achieve sustained torque past 850 Nm, building a custom high-flow N57 M50d, or uncorking an N55 35i to hold boost past 6,000 RPM (yielding 450 to 500+ bhp), these direct bolt-on units fit factory manifold footprints and mate to OEM oil/coolant lines.
-
Direct-Fit Stepped Bar-and-Plate Intercoolers (FMIC): The E70’s expansive front-end carrier houses an undersized factory tube-and-fin intercooler core that heat-soaks after consecutive motorway pulls or when towing uphill. Our competition-grade stepped front-mount intercoolers feature dense bar-and-plate cores and CFD-optimised cast-aluminium end tanks, delivering up to an 85% increase in frontal core volume. This drops IATs by up to 25°C while maintaining negligible boost pressure drop across the cooling circuit.
-
Mandrel-Bent T304 Stainless Downpipes (Decat & DPF-Delete): Relieve massive hot-side backpressure right off the exhaust turbine housings. Precision-fabricated from 3-inch, 3.5-inch, and 4-inch aircraft-grade T304 stainless steel with precision TIG welds, our downpipes eliminate factory ceramic monoliths and restrictive DPF filters. This slashes turbine backpressure, drops operating EGTs by up to 150°C, and accelerates turbo spool by 300–400 RPM while delivering a deep, refined straight-six exhaust growl without cabin resonance.

BMW M57 3.0L Diesel (Pre-LCI 2006–2010):
-
3.0d Single-Turbo (235 PS): Garrett GT2260V variable-geometry turbo requiring a direct-fit 3.0-inch decat downpipe.
-
3.0sd / 35d Sequential Twin-Turbo (286 PS): Features the BorgWarner KP39 + K27 dual-stage assembly. Includes dedicated downpipes for European Euro 4 models as well as North American spec (M57Y) models, replacing both the close-coupled DPF and the underfloor SCR/catalytic converter assemblies.
-
-
BMW N57 3.0L Diesel (LCI 2010–2013):
-
30d Single-Turbo (245 PS) & 40d Twin-Turbo (306 PS): Upgraded aluminium block requiring 3.0-inch or 3.5-inch DPF-delete downpipes engineered with specific compound bends to clear the revised LCI front differential and subframe.
-
M50d Tri-Turbo (381 PS): Multi-stage turbo assembly with bespoke downpipe flanges designed to relieve high exhaust volume off the triple-turbo manifold.
-
-
BMW N55 3.0L Petrol (xDrive35i LCI 2010–2013): Available with 3.5-inch (Pneumatic Wastegate / PWG) and 4.0-inch (Electronic Wastegate / EWG) downpipe connections. Paired with rigid aluminium charge pipe kits to eliminate the catastrophic failure of the OEM plastic throttle-body pipe under boost.
-
xDrive Chassis Clearances: All E70 models feature longitudinal powertrains with standard xDrive. Our downpipes feature precision CNC-bent clearance profiles engineered specifically to route around the front axle half-shafts, transfer case, and transmission support crossmembers without contact under engine torque deflection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do E60 5 Series or E90 3 Series downpipes fit the E70 X5?
No. While the M57, N57, and N55 engines are shared across platforms, the E70 X5 utilises a significantly taller engine bay, reinforced front subframe carriers, and distinct front driveshaft packaging for the xDrive system. Downpipes from saloon or estate models will contact the E70 subframe or steering rack. Dedicated E70-specific downpipes are required.
What hardware is required for a Stage 2 ECU tune on an E70 X5 (35d, 40d, or 35i)?
A high-flow sports-cat or decat/DPF-delete downpipe is required to relieve turbine backpressure and lower EGTs. An upgraded stepped front-mount intercooler (FMIC) is essential on all models to prevent charge-air thermal saturation under continuous boost. On the N55 35i, an aluminium charge pipe is also mandatory to prevent the factory plastic pipe from fracturing.
Will an upgraded downpipe cause an engine management light (EML)?
Yes. Catless downpipes on petrol N55 models trigger secondary O2 sensor catalyst efficiency codes (P0420/P0430). On M57 and N57 diesels, removing the factory DPF flags differential pressure and temperature sensor codes. An appropriate Stage 2 ECU recalibration (DME/DDE tune) is required to disable catalyst and DPF fault reporting.
