BMW B58 Gen 1 Supercore by Falcon Turbos

Unlocking the potential of your B58: The Falcon Turbos B58 Supercore upgrade

Unlocking the potential of your B58 with the Falcon Turbos BMW B58 Supercore bolt on upgrade

BMW’s B58 3.0-litre straight-six has rightfully earned its status as the modern benchmark for inline-six performance. Found across the M140i, M240i, 340i, 440i, 540i, and the Toyota GR Supra, it pairs a closed-deck block and forged steel crankshaft capable of handling serious power straight out of the box.

While basic Stage 1 and Stage 2 calibrations wake these engines up, owners pushing past 450 bhp invariably run into a hard mechanical wall: the stock turbocharger suffocates.

Pushing the factory unit beyond 21–23 PSI forces the compressor out of its efficiency window, turning the turbo into a thermal bottleneck that traps extreme exhaust backpressure, spikes intake air temperatures, and causes the ECU to pull timing.

To shatter that bottleneck without the expense, lag, and custom fabrication of a big-frame turbo swap, we have engineered the Falcon Turbos BMW B58 Supercore—a precision drop-in core that unlocks true Stage 3 performance.

What Is the Falcon Turbos B58 Supercore?

On the B58 engine, the factory turbo features an integrated manifold and turbine housing cast as a single unit. Rather than requiring you to discard your factory setup and invest thousands in bespoke tubular manifolds, external wastegates, and modified downpipes, the Falcon Supercore is a complete Centre Housing Rotating Assembly (CHRA) that replaces the heart of your turbo.

It bolts directly into your existing housings and plumbing, preserving the OEM footprint while packing motorsport-grade internals:

  • Direct Fitment: Retains your original electronic wastegate (EWG), factory oil and coolant lines, chargepipe orientation, and downpipe connection.
  • Factory “OEM+” Stealth: Looks stock from the outside while eliminating the fabrication headaches and heat clearance issues common to big-frame top-mount swaps.
  • Plug-and-Play Installation: Drastically cuts down workshop labour hours compared to a full-frame conversion.

Engineered Inside: Proprietary Falcon Hardware

Founded in Sheffield in 2016, Falcon Turbo Developments Ltd builds units engineered to outperform OEM specifications. Inside the B58 Supercore, every critical wear surface and aerodynamic profile has been re-engineered:

1. Lightweight CNC-Machined Billet Compressor Wheel

Milled from a solid block of aircraft-grade forged aluminium, our oversized billet wheel features aggressive, thin-blade profiles and extended-tip technology. Despite its larger diameter, the reduced mass lowers rotational inertia, delivering lightning-fast transient response between gear shifts while drawing in significantly higher air mass at lower intake temperatures.

2. High-Flow Inconel Turbine Shaft

To eliminate the severe backpressure trapped behind the cylinder head at high RPM, our supercore incorporates an enlarged, high-flow turbine wheel cast from aerospace-grade Inconel superalloy. Enriched with titanium, aluminium, molybdenum and niobium, Inconel maintains its structural integrity and creep resistance past 1000°C, allowing your B58 to exhale freely and pull cleanly to the 7,000 RPM redline.

3. Heavy-Duty 360-Degree Thrust Bearing System

Factory B58 units rely on standard 270-degree thrust bearings with an open lubrication gap—a vulnerable design prone to metal-on-metal contact and shaft play under elevated boost. The Falcon Supercore features our proprietary 360-degree thrust bearing configuration. Featuring precision-machined oil channels, it provides an unbroken hydrodynamic oil wedge around the shaft, absorbing high axial loads under hard acceleration and track-day use.

4. Multi-Stage High-Speed Dynamic VSR Balancing

Every Falcon Supercore is dynamically balanced on our in-house CIMAT Turbo Test Duo Expert Vibration Sorting Rig (VSR). Driven by compressed air up to operational speeds exceeding 200,000 RPM with hot, pressurised oil flowing through the core, our technicians calibrate the rotating assembly down to tolerances tighter than OEM. This eliminates harmonic resonance, stops the dreaded “police siren” whistle, protects the bronze journal bearings and piston ring seals, and guarantees long-term durability.

Supporting Modifications for Optimum Results

To extract the maximum potential from your Falcon Turbos Supercore while protecting your drivetrain, we recommend pairing the installation with:

  • High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP): Gen 1 B58 cars (F20 M140i, F30 340i) run out of pump flow at around 450–470 bhp. A direct-fit B58TU pump or Dorch Stage 2 unit supplies the required fuelling overhead.
  • Free-Flowing Downpipe: A 4-inch or 4.5-inch high-flow sports cat or decat downpipe relieves exhaust backpressure and drops exhaust gas temperatures.
  • Aluminium Chargepipe: Replaces the brittle factory plastic pipe to prevent boost leaks and blow-offs under higher pressures.
  • Cooling Upgrades: An uprated front-mount heat exchanger keeps charge temperatures stable across back-to-back pulls.
  • Transmission Calibration (TCU Flash): An xHP Stage 3 flash raises the factory torque limiters on the ZF 8-speed automatic box and increases clutch clamping pressure to handle the torque surge.
  • Stage 3 Engine Remap: Bespoke ECU calibration or Bootmod3 / MHD tailored to 99 RON or ethanol-blend fuel. Check out our list of trusted tuners.

The Ultimate Hybrid Turbo Upgrade Guide for the BMW B58

Unlocking Stage 3: The Ultimate BMW B58 Hybrid Turbo Upgrade Guide

The BMW B58 modular straight-six engine has rightfully earned its reputation as the modern-day 2JZ. Found in the M140i, M340i, and the A90 Supra, it is an absolute masterpiece of engineering that responds to tuning like few other platforms on earth.

With a simple Stage 1 or Stage 2 flash tune, you can easily push this 3.0-litre power plant from its modest factory figures up toward the 400 to 420 bhp mark. But eventually, you run headfirst into a hard hardware ceiling.

If your goal is to break through the 450 bhp barrier safely and unlock true Stage 3 performance, the factory turbocharger has to go. Here is exactly why the stock B58 setup runs out of breath, where the true limits of the factory internals and fuel system lie, and how a Falcon Hybrid Turbo safely unlocks the next tier of power.

The Factory Limits: When the Twin-Scroll Suffocates

The stock B58 utilises a single twin-scroll turbocharger designed for instantaneous low-down torque and rapid response. It’s an exceptionally efficient design for daily driving, but it was never sized to move massive volumes of air at high RPM.

When you attempt to max out the stock turbo — pushing boost targets to the limit — you push the factory compressor completely out of its efficiency window.

  • The Backpressure Trap: The small exhaust turbine wheel and tight internal housing create a massive bottleneck for spent exhaust gases. This causes severe exhaust backpressure to build up within the manifold.
  • The Heat Monster: Because the exhaust gases cannot escape quickly enough, extreme thermal energy is trapped right at the cylinder head. This heat transfers directly into the turbo core, transforming the factory unit into a glorified “heat pump”.
  • The Timing Drop: As intake air temperatures (IATs) rise, the factory liquid-to-air intercooler gets overwhelmed. To prevent catastrophic engine knock or pre-ignition, the Bosch ECU steps in and aggressively pulls back ignition timing.

The result? You might see a high peak boost number on your dashboard gauge momentarily, but the turbo is blowing nothing but superheated air, causing your top-end power to taper off dramatically.

Deep Dive: Stock Internals & Fuelling Limits

Enthusiasts often ask: If I install a larger turbo, will my engine blow up?

With the B58, the short answer is no—provided your fuelling is up to the task. BMW built this platform with an incredibly robust architecture, featuring a rigid closed-deck block and a forged steel crankshaft.

The Engine Internals: 600+ bhp Safe Zone

Unlike older BMW platforms, the B58’s factory rods, rod bearings, and pistons are exceptionally robust. In the tuning scene, the factory bottom end has been proven to safely and reliably handle up to 600 to 650 bhp (around 550 whp) on stock internals before you ever need to think about opening up the block for forged components. The weakest link at extreme power levels is typically the factory piston ring lands or rods, but they remain perfectly safe within standard Stage 3 hybrid parameters.

The Fuelling System: The Real Stage 2+ Bottleneck

While the engine block is ready for war, the factory high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) on First-Generation B58 engines (found in F-chassis cars like the M140i and 340i) is not.

The Fuelling Wall: The stock Gen 1 HPFP completely runs out of flow volume around 450 to 470 bhp. Attempting to push past this point on stock fuelling causes fuel rail pressure to plummet under load, leading to dangerous lean conditions and immediate engine hesitation or misfires.

To safely cross into the 500+ bhp Stage 3 territory with a Falcon Hybrid Turbo, upgrading the fuel pump is necessary.

The Falcon Solution: Re-Engineering the B58 Core

The Falcon B58 Hybrid Turbo is designed specifically to shift the engine’s efficiency island upward, allowing you to run higher boost pressures cooler, safer, and with zero custom fabrication.

[Factory Turbine Housing] ───> CNC Precision Bored ───> Fits Oversized Mar-M High-Flow Wheel
[Factory Compressor Housing] ─> CNC Precision Bored ───> Fits Lightweight Forged Billet Wheel

1. Oversized Forged Billet Compressor Wheel

We CNC-machine the factory aluminium compressor housing to house a significantly larger, lightweight forged billet compressor wheel. This advanced wheel profile features extended-tip geometry that pulls in a vastly greater air mass at lower rotational speeds. It allows the turbo to comfortably deliver high boost without over-speeding or generating excessive intake heat.

2. High-Flow Turbine Wheel

To cure the B58’s notorious top-end backpressure, the exhaust housing is re-profiled to accept a larger, high-flow turbine wheel. This dramatically lowers restriction, allowing the engine to exhale cleanly at high RPM and maintain a relentless pull all the way to the 7,000 RPM redline.

3. Upgraded 360° Thrust Profile

The factory thrust bearing inside the B58 turbo isn’t designed to withstand sustained high axial loads. Falcon upgrades the internal architecture to a heavy-duty 360-degree thrust bearing configuration. This ensures continuous oil film lubrication across a full circle, preventing shaft play and ensuring the core survives high-boost, fast-road, or track environments.

The Stage 3 Supporting Mods Checklist

To extract the full potential of your Falcon Hybrid and ensure your B58 runs like a factory car with double the horsepower, you must install the proper supporting ecosystem:

  • Upgraded High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP): For Gen 1 B58 cars, installing a direct-fit B58TU high-pressure fuel pump (from the newer Gen 2 engines/Supra) or a dedicated aftermarket pump (like Dorch) is mandatory to supply the extra fuel volume required for 500+ bhp.
  • Upgraded Chargepipe & Intakes: The factory plastic chargepipe is notorious for cracking and blowing completely off the throttle body once boost passes 20 PSI. A high-quality aluminium replacement is mandatory.
  • High-Flow or Decat Downpipe: Swapping out the restrictive factory catalytic converter for a 4-inch or 5-inch high-flow downpipe lowers backpressure further, allowing the hybrid turbo to spool up instantly.
  • Upgraded Intake Manifold / Plenum Cooling: Because the B58 features a water-to-air intercooler integrated directly inside the intake manifold plenum, upgrading the front heat exchanger radiator is highly recommended to keep IATs ice-cold during consecutive pulls.
  • Crucial Gearbox (TCU) Remapping: The legendary ZF 8-speed automatic transmission is tough, but its factory software contains strict internal torque limiters. A comprehensive TCU flash (such as xHP Stage 3) is required to raise these limits, increase clutch clamping pressure, and prevent the transmission from slipping under the massive wave of mid-range torque.
  • Custom Stage 3 ECU Mapping: A custom flash calibration via Bootmod3 or MHD is tailored specifically to your fuel quality (whether 99 RON pump gas or an ethanol blend) to balance boost, ignition timing, and fuelling safely.
