Performance Hardware for BMW E46 M47 & M57 Diesel Engines
The E46 3 Series—particularly the M57 3.0L straight-six and M47 2.0L four-cylinder diesel models—is a cult-classic platform capable of astonishing torque outputs when liberated from factory exhaust and thermal restrictions. Pushing an E46 330d or 320d into Stage 2 or Stage 3 territory quickly overloads the restrictive factory catalytic converter, the stock sidemount or undersized intercooler, and the limits of the Garrett GT-series turbine compressor.
Our E46 diesel performance catalogue is engineered around three core upgrades designed to maximise volumetric efficiency and lower exhaust gas temperatures (EGTs):
-
Billet Hybrid Turbochargers (M47 & M57): Replace fragile or worn factory variable-geometry (VNT) turbos with units featuring CNC-machined lightweight billet compressor wheels, upgraded 360-degree motorsport thrust bearings, and custom flow-optimised turbine blades. Designed to bolt directly to the original manifold flange and factory oil/coolant lines, they deliver sustained boost pressure to support custom ECU remaps well beyond 300+ bhp.
-
Heavy-Duty Stepped Front-Mount Intercoolers (FMIC): The factory E46 330d layout suffers from severe heat soak, especially with the tiny OEM sidemount unit or restrictive factory front-pack. Our bar-and-plate stepped intercoolers maximise frontal airflow across the bumper aperture, slashing intake air temperatures (IATs) to prevent thermal derating and protect engine internals under heavy load.
-
T304 Stainless Steel Decat Downpipes: Eliminate the restrictive primary and secondary catalytic converters directly off the turbo exhaust housing. Mandrel-bent T304 stainless steel pipework dramatically drops backpressure against the turbine wheel, allowing the turbocharger to spool up significantly faster while lowering operating EGTs and reducing engine bay thermal stress.

-
BMW M57 3.0L Diesel (330d / 330xd): Fitment covers both the 184 PS (M57D30) and the later 204 PS (M57D30TÜ) engines across Saloon (E46/4), Touring (E46/3), Coupé (E46/2), and Convertible (E46/5) bodies. High-flow downpipes and stepped intercoolers are essential foundations for safe high-torque mapping.
-
BMW M47 2.0L Diesel (320d / 318d): Engineered for the M47TU and M47D20 platforms. Upgraded hybrid turbos and decat downpipes transform the power delivery of the 4-cylinder diesel, expanding the usable powerband and eliminating low-RPM turbo lag.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a decat downpipe pass an MOT or emissions test on an E46 diesel?
In regions with strict visual and tailpipe emissions inspections (such as the UK MOT test), a completely catless downpipe removes the emissions equipment. For road-legal compliance, pairing a high-flow setup with a well-maintained factory or aftermarket Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) solution where applicable is recommended, though many older E46 models originally left the factory with oxidation catalysts rather than DPFs.
Do I need to modify the front bumper to fit an upgraded E46 stepped intercooler?
Most of our direct-fit E46 intercoolers are designed to fit behind the factory M-Sport or SE bumper with minor trimming of the hidden plastic inner shrouds. The metal crash bar and exterior bumper skin remain intact.
What supporting mods are required for an E46 M57 hybrid turbo?
To safely run a hybrid turbo on an M57 330d, you will need an upgraded intercooler, a free-flowing decat downpipe, an uprated clutch (or built automatic transmission map) to handle torque spikes exceeding 600 Nm, and a custom Stage 3 ECU calibration.
