Engineered Forced Induction & Exhaust Upgrades for BMW X1 F48 (B48 & B47)
The second-generation BMW X1 (F48) combines practical crossover utility with BMW Group’s responsive modular engine family. Whether tuning the B48 2.0L 4-cylinder petrol (sDrive20i, xDrive20i, xDrive25i, xDrive28i) or extracting massive low-end torque from the B47 2.0L turbo-diesel (18d, 20d, 25d), the UKL2 platform has proven mechanical headroom. However, aggressive Stage 2 and Stage 3 calibrations quickly hit factory thermal and exhaust flow restrictions.
Pushing boost levels past factory thresholds on an SAV platform exposes acute bottlenecks: tight transverse engine bay packaging, restrictive close-coupled primary catalytic converters, dense post-2018 Gasoline/Diesel Particulate Filters (GPF/OPF), and rapid charge-air heat soak.
Our curated F48 performance catalogue eliminates these mechanical choke points directly:
-
Billet Hybrid Turbochargers (B48 & B47): Standard factory turbos experience sharp boost taper past 5,500 RPM. Our direct bolt-on hybrid units feature multi-axis CNC-machined lightweight extended-tip billet compressor wheels, enlarged exhaust turbines, and heavy-duty 360-degree motorsport thrust bearings. Capable of supporting 300 to 380+ bhp on B48 petrol models and over 500 Nm of torque on B47 diesels, these units mount directly to the transverse cylinder head interface while retaining OEM oil and coolant lines.
-
Direct-Fit Stepped Bar-and-Plate Intercoolers (FMIC): Due to restricted frontal grille airflow and compact packaging, the factory tube-and-fin intercooler quickly heat-soaks after consecutive hard acceleration runs. Elevated Intake Air Temperatures (IATs) force the Bosch MG1/MD1 DME to retard ignition timing and reduce boost pressure. Our stepped competition-grade front-mount intercoolers deliver up to an 80% increase in frontal volume, dropping IATs by up to 25°C while maintaining low pressure drop.
-
Mandrel-Bent T304 Stainless Downpipes (Decat & Sports-Cat): Relieve massive hot-side backpressure right off the turbine outlet. Fabricated from 2.75-inch and 3-inch aircraft-grade T304 stainless steel with precision TIG welds, our downpipes drop operating Exhaust Gas Temperatures (EGTs) by up to 150°C, accelerate turbo spool by 300–400 RPM, and produce a sharp, purposeful exhaust note without excessive cabin resonance.
Drivetrain & Architecture Breakdown
-
sDrive (FWD) vs. xDrive (AWD): Downpipes for front-wheel-drive (sDrive) models feature a direct path through the exhaust tunnel. For xDrive models, downpipes incorporate precision compound mandrel bends specifically clearance-engineered to navigate around the front power transfer unit (PTU) and propshaft.
-
Pre-LCI vs. LCI Facelift (Emissions Configurations):
-
Pre-LCI (2015–mid 2018): Standard Euro 6 configuration with primary catalytic converter/DPF and upstream/downstream oxygen sensors.
-
LCI (mid 2018–2022): Equipped with factory GPF/OPF on petrol models and updated SCR/DPF systems on diesels. Our OPF-compatible downpipes include precision CNC-machined differential pressure and temperature sensor bungs matching OEM locations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do F30 3 Series or E84 X1 downpipes fit the F48 X1?
No. The F30 3 Series and E84 X1 utilise longitudinal (front-to-back) engine layouts. The F48 X1 utilises a transverse (cross-mounted UKL2) engine layout. Turbo orientation, downpipe bend geometry, and bracket locations are entirely different and cannot be interchanged.
What hardware is mandatory for a Stage 2 ECU tune on an F48 X1?
A high-flow downpipe (200-cell sports-cat or decat) is required to reduce turbine backpressure and protect turbocharger thrust bearings from excessive heat. An upgraded stepped front-mount intercooler (FMIC) is mandatory to prevent thermal heat soak and timing pull under continuous load.
Will an upgraded downpipe cause an engine management light (EML)?
Yes. Catless (decat) downpipes trigger secondary O2 sensor catalyst efficiency codes (P0420/P0430). On post-2018 models equipped with GPF/OPF, removing the filter triggers exhaust differential pressure sensor faults. A Stage 2 ECU tune (DME/DDE calibration) or an OPF emulator module is required to disable fault reporting.
