Engineered Forced Induction & Exhaust Upgrades for BMW X4 F26 (N55, N57 B47)
The first-generation BMW X4 (F26) combines a sloping coupé silhouette with the rugged underpinnings of an all-wheel-drive SAV. Whether dialling in the factory-hot N55 3.0L straight-six petrol (xDrive35i & M40i) or unlocking immense towing torque from the B47 2.0l diesel and N57 3.0L straight-six diesel (xDrive30d & sequential twin-turbo 35d), the F26 chassis possesses massive mechanical headroom.
However, extracting sustained Stage 2, Stage 3, and hybrid turbo power on a 1.9-tonne vehicle is limited by severe factory choke points: dense close-coupled primary catalytic converters, restrictive Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs), fragile plastic boost pipes prone to bursting, and undersized tube-and-fin charge-air coolers that heat-soak rapidly.
Our F26 performance parts eliminate these mechanical bottlenecks directly:
-
Billet Hybrid Turbochargers (N55 & N57): Standard factory turbos experience heavy boost taper past 5,500 RPM and excessive shaft speeds under aggressive remapping. Engineered with 5-to-7-axis CNC-machined lightweight extended-tip billet compressor wheels, oversized exhaust turbines, and heavy-duty 360-degree motorsport thrust bearings. Whether upgrading an N55 35i/M40i to hold boost cleanly past 6,200 RPM (yielding 450 to 520+ bhp) or uncorking the sequential N57 35d beyond 420 bhp and 850 Nm of torque, these units bolt directly to OEM manifold locations and mate to factory oil and coolant lines.
-
Direct-Fit Stepped Bar-and-Plate Intercoolers (FMIC): In an SAC chassis, consecutive hard pulls rapidly saturate the stock tube-and-fin charge-air cooler. Elevated Intake Air Temperatures (IATs) force the Bosch MEVD17/EDC17 DME/DDE to pull ignition timing and reduce boost pressure. Our stepped competition-grade front-mount intercoolers feature dense bar-and-plate cores with cast-aluminium end tanks, providing up to an 85% increase in core volume to drop IATs by up to 25°C with negligible pressure drop.
-
Mandrel-Bent T304 Stainless Downpipes (Decat & Sports-Cat): Relieve massive hot-side backpressure right off the turbine exits. Fabricated from 3-inch, 3.5-inch, and 4-inch aircraft-grade T304 stainless steel with precision TIG welds, our downpipes slash turbine backpressure, drop Exhaust Gas Temperatures (EGTs) by up to 150°C, and accelerate turbo spool by 300–400 RPM while maintaining a drone-free, refined executive exhaust tone.
-
Aluminium Boost & Charge Pipe Upgrades (N55 Mandatory Fix): The factory plastic charge pipe on the N55 engine becomes brittle from continuous thermal cycling and routinely shears at the throttle-body flange under elevated Stage 1/Stage 2 boost pressure (14+ psi). Our CNC-machined mandrel-bent aluminium charge pipes feature integrated dual 1/8-inch NPT meth bungs and reinforced silicone couplers to ensure boost reliability.
BMW X4 F26 Platform & Powertrain Architecture Breakdown
-
BMW N55 3.0L Petrol (35i vs. M40i):
-
Early 35i (2014–mid 2015): Pneumatic Wastegate (PWG) with a 3.5-inch (approx. 89mm) turbo outlet downpipe connection.
-
Late 35i & M40i (mid 2015–2018): Electronic Wastegate (EWG) with an enlarged 4.0-inch (approx. 102mm) turbo outlet downpipe connection. The M40i (N55B30T0) uses EWG exclusively.
-
-
BMW N57 3.0L Diesel (30d vs. 35d):
-
30d Single-Turbo: Single Garrett variable-geometry (VNT) turbocharger requiring a direct-fit 3.0-inch DPF-delete downpipe.
-
35d Sequential Twin-Turbo: Features the dual-stage BorgWarner KP39 + K27 assembly requiring a downpipe with specialised wastegate clearance profiles.
-
- BMW B47 2.0L Modular Diesel:
-
-
20d Single-Turbo: Direct-fit decat downpipes and responsive billet hybrid turbochargers engineered around Euro 6 sensor requirements to eliminate off-the-line lag and broaden towing torque.
-
-
xDrive Front Drivetrain Clearance: Unlike rear-wheel-drive saloons, all F26 models feature standard xDrive with a front differential, right-side axle shaft, and transfer case. Our downpipes feature precision CNC-bent clearance profiles engineered specifically to prevent contact or unwanted chassis vibration under hard engine torque deflection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do F30 3 Series or F10 5 Series downpipes fit the F26 X4?
No. While the N55 and N57 engines are shared, downpipes from an F30 or F10 do not bolt cleanly onto the F26 X4. The F26 utilises a taller front subframe, distinct transmission tunnel geometry, and specific clearance profiles to clear the front axle driveshaft and transfer case. Dedicated F26/F25 downpipes are required.
What hardware is required for a Stage 2 ECU tune on an F26 N55 (35i or M40i)?
A high-flow sports-cat or decat downpipe (4-inch EWG or 3.5-inch PWG) is required to reduce turbine backpressure and manage EGTs. An upgraded stepped front-mount intercooler (FMIC) and an aluminium charge pipe are mandatory to prevent charge-air heat soak and throttle-body flange failure.
Will an upgraded downpipe cause an engine management light (EML)?
Yes. Catless (decat) downpipes on the petrol N55 trigger secondary O2 sensor catalyst efficiency codes (P0420/P0430). On diesel N57 engines, removing the factory DPF flags differential pressure sensor codes. An appropriate Stage 2 ECU recalibration (DME/DDE calibration) is required to disable fault reporting.
